Canadian Style

MathActive

MathActive lessons are Flash animated math modules designed for grades K-12. Each module features content that touches on a Shape and Space idea.
MathActive lessons were built around educator mathematical expertise and pedagogy. Using Backward Design, each module was created to target a specific geometry performance objective. From the educator-created lesson plan, students animated the lesson in Flash. Many of the modules are created with English, Spanish and Navajo narration. MathActive has been used for remediation, extension activities and the introduction of concepts.

Math Advantage

The activities at this site were created to accompany specific chapters in Harcourt’s Math Advantage textbook series. The activities, however, relate to basic math concepts and can be used successfully with any Math program. This online graphing calculator can be used to graph equations, do physics simulations or plot data files. The graphs have descriptions and sound so you can hear and read about the graph. What's this fuss about true randomness?
Perhaps you have wondered how predictable machines like computers can generate randomness. In reality, most random numbers used in computer programs are pseudo-random, which means they are a generated in a predictable fashion using a mathematical formula. This is fine for many purposes, but it may not be random in the way you expect if you're used to dice rolls and lottery drawings.
RANDOM.ORG offers true random numbers to anyone on the Internet. The randomness comes from atmospheric noise, which for many purposes is better than the pseudo-random number algorithms typically used in computer programs. People use RANDOM.ORG for holding drawings, lotteries and sweepstakes, to drive games and gambling sites, for scientific applications and for art and music. The service has existed since 1998 and was built and is being operated by Mads Haahr of the School of Computer Science and Statistics at Trinity College, Dublin in Ireland.
As of today, RANDOM.ORG has generated 937.7 billion random bits for the Internet community.

NCTM Apps

On August 28, two educators from NCTM explained how Tic-Tac-Toe and Deep Sea Duel, a math strategy game from Illuminations, can promote problem solving and deep thinking.

In the webinar Games That Encourage and Enhance Mathematical Thinking and Sense Making (recording), Sarah Deleeuw and Patrick Vennebush described how math strategy games can be used to incorporate the standards of mathematical practice.

Based on several articles from NCTM journals, the webinar suggested that even simple games can promote critical thinking and develop mathematical reasoning. A report of the webinar appears at eSchoolNews.
